After A Fire

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

Fires can be deadly and cause a ton of damage to your property. Sometimes after the area is restored there will be lingering issues. There will be a slight smell due to the extent of the issue. Also there will be smoke and residue left behind as well.

Although this is frustrating, it is completely normal and unavoidable. There are three different types of smoke and residue that is typically left behind.

  1. Synthetic
  2. Protein
  3. Natural

Synthetic residue is typically caused by fabric or plastic burning. This is because those are oil based materials. This creates a thick black smoke with residue. The residue is difficult to clean up as it smears.

Protein residue is based around foods containing high proteins burning. This causes a yellow/brownish residue and is difficult to clean up because it is so greasy.

Natural residue is caused from wood and fire burning because they are natural products. The residue is more of a dry powder with a grey and black color. This is much easier than the other residues to cleanup.

If you are facing any fire damage issues with your property, give SERVPRO of San Jacinto/Idyllwild/Lakeview a call at (951) 344-6115.

How To Handle A Storm

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

Many Californians are unequipped to handle a big storm. Thankfully we do not see much of those in Southern California, but it is important to be prepared.

Here are four main tips on how to prepare for a storm or high winds.

  • Secure the foundations and all of the windows

This is important because floodwater can get through cracks. The seals must be working and up to date.

  • Place important documentations in a safe space

Place important documents in plastic, scan extra copies, or keep them in a safe space.

  • Inspect the backflow system

This keeps sewer water from contaminating the area. It should be checked by a trained professional to ensure safety precautions are up to date.

  • Remove leaves and debris from gutters

The gutters should be cleaned regularly so that rain water can flow.

If homeowners take these steps during an emergency, they can be sure to reduce the damage. A storm can also cause flood waters within a business or home which cause even more damage.

It may take some time to prepare everything and assure that all measures are taken. It will be well worth it after the storm passes. If there are any issues, give SERVPRO of San Jacinto/Idyllwild/Lakeview a call! We have a team of trained professionals looking forward to restoring any of your homes needs.

Help Prevent Wildfires

1/21/2022 (Permalink)

The total devastation from wildfires across California and other areas of the USA have bought a lot of attention to a severe problem. With the wet winter and the very dry summers we all need to start trying our best to help prevent future wild fires.

> Report any unattended fires that you may see while you are out and about. If you notice a fire getting out of control and no one else is around do not hesitate to call 911 or the local fire department.

> Make sure to extinguish fire pits and camp fires when you are done. If you go camping and make a fire, firstly make sure not to leave it unattended for any period of time. Once you are done, make sure to completely extinguish it, using water on the ashes to put out any ambers.

> Never throw lit cigarettes, smoking materials or matches out of a moving car or onto the ground as they all have enough heat to start a fire.

> Follow local rules about fireworks and if you can use fireworks make sure to do it in an open area away from trees and wooded areas.

If a wild fire does occur make sure to stay safe!

> They can develop slowly or quickly. If there is flash flooding it can happen with out any warning.

> Cause outages, disrupt transportation, damage buildings and cause landslides.

If you receive a flood warning-

Water Contamination Categories

1/20/2022 (Permalink)

IICRC defines water in to three separate categories to help our technicians know what the correct way to manage the water and also making sure to keep themselves and everyone who may come into contact with the water safe as possible.

Category 1

When water is category 1 water is means it is classified as ‘clean water’. This means it is not harmful to humans. Some examples of where category 1 water would come from are broken water supply lines or if a tap is left running in a bath and it overflows.

Category 2

This is where the water contains significant contamination and may cause discomfort or illness upon exposure. For example the water may contain unsafe levels of bacteria, viruses or mold. Category 2 water can also be referred to as ‘grey water’. Examples where category 2 water may leak from is dishwasher leak or washing machine overflow.

Category 3

This category of water is grossly contaminated. It can contain toxins or pathogens that cause significant adverse reactions after human exposure. It can also be referred to as ‘black water’. Examples of category 3 water are sewer backups, flooding from rivers or toilet overflow.

Our technicians at SERVPRO of San Jacinto/Idyllwild/Lakeview are highly trained in knowing how to handle each of these categories of water. If you have a water loss please do not hesitate to give us a call!

How To Rid Your Yard of Fall Leaves Safely

1/20/2022 (Permalink)

Throughout fall and winter most yards will experience what seems like never ending piles of leaves that have fallen from the trees. Most will choose to burn leaves, which when done safely is perfectly okay, however it doesn't take much for those fires to get out of control.

When burning tree debris in your yard, it is definitely okay to burn leaves, twigs and smaller branches. These burn at such a fast rate leaving little time for it to get out of control while retaining minimal heat once extinguished. However, trying to burn much more than this will become very dangerous, very quickly which can then lead to a wild fire.

Mulch Leaves

Instead of burning leaves the other option is to shred the leaves and use it as mulch to help your lawn or flower beds. Shredding the leaves and placing around 2 inches around growing plants will help them stay healthy during the colder months. Always make sure to shred the leaves as this will allow air flow and control the amount of moisture.

Keep Your Home Safe in Wind Storms

1/20/2022 (Permalink)

Severe winds can occur at any time, or they can accompany storms like hurricanes, tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Here are a few things you should do in order to help keep your home safe-

> Review your insurance policy and make sure you understand it completely. If you are unsure, reach out to your insurance company so they can help you.

> Make sure you keep your roof well maintained. In severe winds it is your first line of defense. Check for loose shingles or tile and check to see if there are any weak spots.

> Prevent wind and water damage inside your home by looking for cracks or gaps around any seals. Make sure caulking around doors and windows is in good condition and fill any holes or gaps around pipes/wires that enter your home.

> Trim or remove dead, damaged or rotting trees. High winds can easily tear up or cause trees to fall, have someone check the condition of your trees to ensure they are strong and healthy.

These are only just a few options to help keep you and your home safe in high winds. The hard work ensuring it is well maintained and safe will go a long way if you ever experience a storm.

Smoke Alarms : Installing and Testing

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

It is important that you make it a habit of checking your smoke detectors on a regular basis to ensure they working correctly to prevent any damages to your home or worse.

Installing Smoke Alarms

> Even though some parts of the home are more susceptible to fires than others, every room in your home should have a smoke alarm. This includes rooms outside sleeping areas such as hallways, on every level of the home including the basement.

> Smoke alarms should be in stalled at least 10ft from any cooking appliance. This ensures the smoke alarm is far enough away to avoid false detection while cooking but close enough to detect any emergencies.

> Avoid installing smoke alarms near windows, doors, air ducts or anything that may cause a draft.

> Install the smoke alarms high on walls and ceilings, if the ceiling is pitched then mount the alarm 4 inches from the top of the peak.

Testing Smoke Alarms

> Smoke alarms should be maintained according to the manufacturers instructions.

> To test a smoke alarm hold the button down that says test to check it has battery and working correctly. This should be done once a month.

> Batteries in smoke alarms should be changed at least once a year whether the battery is good or not.

> When replacing the battery make sure to follow the manufacture instruction guide on what kind of battery to use and how to install it correctly. It may not work correctly if not done properly.

Protecting Your Carpet After Water Damage

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

No matter the amount of water spilled or leaked onto a carpet it can start to cause an unpleasant odor or start to deteriorate the carpet fibers. When it is a small amount of water a household item such as a mop or towel will help soak up the water. However, when there is too much water that is saturating the carpet it is important to call a qualified restoration company such as SERVPRO to assist with removing the water with special equipment that can prevent further damage being done to the carpet.

Carpets that have become saturated with clean water can sometimes be saved if a water mitigation company is called fast enough. Carpets are made up of tiny fibers which easy retain moisture, the longer the water is present the more damage can be done.

> Water can cause carpet to delaminate. This is where the fibers detach from the backing of the carpet; usually if this happens to a carpet it would mean the carpet needs to be replaced. If water is extracted sufficiently and with in timely matter this can be avoided and the carpet can be dried in place.

> To dry carpets the most used approach is when technicians ‘float’ the carpet. This is where air is forced between the carpet and subfloor to allow air circulation which then leads to the carpet drying completely. If done correctly this is a great way to save carpet after water damage has occurred.

> Once the carpet has been dried to restore it back to preloss condition the carpet is cleaned with professional products and machines and when done correctly you won’t even know the carpet had been affected.

Earthquake plans

7/5/2021 (Permalink)

Safety plan when the ground starts to shake. When an earthquake happens locate a place in each room of the house that you can go to in case of an earthquake also keep flashlights in a nearby accessible place. This spot should be where nothing can fall on you. Remain inside until the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit the building. When it begins to shake take cover under a desk or table and hold on. Stay away from windows in case of them breaking and causing injuries and also stay away from light fixtures.. If you are in bed remain there hold on and protect your head with a pillow. If you are outside, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, and power lines and drop to the ground. If you are in a car, begin to slow down and locate a safe place never near a tree, or a building that may collapse. Remain in your car until the shaking has stopped.

Reasons why pipes burst

4/14/2021 (Permalink)

Burst pipes can happen any where to any type of building. It sounds like a car backfiring, this loud pop sound, when these water pipes burst. The result is major flooding in the home and structural damage problems for homeowners. Here are four main reason why a burst pipe can occur:
1.Moving Pipes
2. Water Pressure
3. Corrosion
4. Frozen Pipes

Moving Pipes
Pipes can move around in the walls and ceilings if they aren’t secured properly and there is a sudden build up in water pressure. You can actually hear your water pipes making noise in the those cavities. If it sounds like they are clanging against each other, it’s called water hammer. This is where the pipes are moving back and fourth due to not being held in place properly. Over time these will become weakened at the connections until the water pressure is too much and it causes the connection to ‘pop’ and water will then escape and with in minutes the entire floor could be flooded.

Water Pressure
The water pressure must be kept at a normal setting in order for your water supply pipes to work and function efficiently. If you notice an increase in the water pressure this can cause for a pipe to burst. The increase in the water pressure will eventually cause a rupture in the pipe which will lead to a burst pipe. If you think your water pressure has increased, it’s best to check it out immediately. Grab yourself a pressure gauge and attach it to a sink. The pressure will move the needle on the gauge and display the water pressure in PSI.
The water pressure in most homes is between 30-50 PSI which is sufficient enough and won’t cause any damage to the pipes.

Corrosion
Pipes are meant to last a long time but they can’t guarantee us reliable service for indefinitely. Over time, some buildings will experience corrosion which can cause the pipes to start to fail or decay. Corrosion is caused by an imbalance of pH in the water. It won’t seem like an immediate emergency, how ever over the years if ignored the corrosion will star to occur.

When buildings were first constructed the pipes would be made on galvanized iron, the minerals inside the water will start to slowly break down the galvanized coating and expose the iron pipe beneath. Once this happens over time the iron will turn to rust and gradually clog the interior of the pipe which prevents water from flowing through. As a result, your pipe may burst or the water flow may stop completely.

Frozen Pipes
In the winter months in areas that experience extreme cold weather, some serious issues arise for the water supply pipes in the homes. The water flowing through the pipe can become frozen. With ice having more volume than water, once frozen it will expand with in the pipe causing an increase in pressure. The pressure continues to build and the only way for it to escape is to force it’s way through the weakest section of the pipe.
In order to prevent your pipes from freezing try to maintain a temperature of above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

What To Do When Lightning Strikes

12/6/2020 (Permalink)

Do-

>If the weather is showing possible signs of a thunderstorms, keep an eye on the weather forecast and postpone your trip or activity, or make sure adequate safe shelter is readily available.

>Go indoors as quickly as possible. Remember the phrase, “When thunder roars, go indoors.”

>Seek shelter immediately even if caught out in the open. If you are caught in an open area, act quickly to find adequate shelter. The most important action is to remove yourself from danger. Crouching or getting low to the ground can reduce your chances of being struck, but does not remove you from danger.

Don't-

>Don’t stay in open vehicles, structures, and spaces.

>During a thunderstorm, avoid open vehicles such as convertibles, motorcycles, and golf carts. Be sure to avoid open structures such as porches, gazebos, baseball dugouts, and sports arenas. And stay away from open spaces such as golf courses, parks, playgrounds, ponds, lakes, swimming pools, and beaches.

>Don’t stay near tall structures.

>Do NOT lie on concrete floors during a thunderstorm. Also, avoid leaning on concrete walls. Lightning can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.

Why Choose SERVPRO over DIY?

12/1/2020 (Permalink)

Choosing a water restoration company over trying your hand at DIY can save you time, money and a whole lot of stress!

Big or small, any water intrusion inside your home can bring headaches, stress, and costly repairs. Rather than waiting too long to call in the pros or trying your hand at cleaning up yourself, SERVPRO can be at your home within hours helping you on your way to having your home back to normal!

Why do you need to worry about secondary damages?

Any moisture left behind after a water intrusion whether it comes from a supply line or a severe flood can turn in to major problem if not cleaned up and dried sufficiently.

Even if you think you used your wet vacuum to pull up all of the water, you may be missing areas where water traveled. These are things to keep in mind:

  • Water travels to dry spaces while following the path of least resistance.
  • Moisture often ends up under flooring, behind baseboards, and underneath cabinetry, which remains invisible to the naked eye.
  • Secondary water damage occurs when moisture lingers, including the destruction of building materials and the onset of mold and mildew.

We are here to help!

If you have suffered from a leak and have cleared majority of the water, please give us a call and we can send out one of our highly trained technicians to inspect the affected areas for remaining moisture and go over the next steps with you.

Tips For Flood Damages!

12/1/2020 (Permalink)

Finding flood damage in your home can create quite a bit of stress; after all, no one likes discovering that their living room has been turned into a water recreation facility. As a result, many homeowners are likely to panic and make poor choices in the hours that follow. You can avoid these mistakes by following the flood damage checklist below:

Ensure your safety

Once you see a flood of water in your basement, it may be tempting to go charging right in, but this is generally a bad idea. First, you need to ensure that you're safe. If the power is still on, you could be electrocuted. Additionally, sewage will make you ill, and the water from flood damage can conceal sharp objects to cut yourself on.

Shut off the water source

Now that you know you’re safe, next you need to ensure that the source of the water has been taken care of. Sometimes, this is as simple as turning off a water supply valve. However, more complex problems, like a flooded sewer line, could actually take a few hours. It's a good idea to call the appropriate professional, like a plumber, right away to give them time to start driving out to your flood damaged property.

Call your insurance

Sure, it's tempting to have your first call be to a flood damage clean-up professional, but there's a chance that your insurance doesn't contract out with them. Instead, it's better to have your insurance's claim number programmed into your phone. Call them, report the flood damage, and then call a professional they contract out with.

Call a clean-up crew

Most flood damage clean-up  projects are just too large for you to tackle by yourself. Besides, depending on where you live, you'll likely have mold to clean up afterwards as well. Any money spent on a flood damage clean-up crew will likely be well worth it.

Take pictures and document damage

Your insurance policy will need proof of flood damage if they are going to write you a check. When you're on the phone with your insurance company and the clean-up crew, take photos of the flood damage. Make sure to get detailed photos of valuable items.

If you've planned well, you'll also have pictures of your home in an undamaged state. This lets you prove the state that your house and items were in before the disaster.

Remove what can be saved

Once you've ensured that the area is safe, you have help on the way, and you've thoroughly documented the flood damage, you can begin to remove items out of the area. A word of caution: water is extremely heavy. Any water soaked items will weigh a lot more than you expect. Please, be careful not to injure yourself.

Begin the remediation process

This is where professionals will come in handy. During the remediation process, all excess water will need to be removed, the humidity will need to be brought down to an appropriate level, mold prevention steps will need to be taken, and damaged drywall or flooring will need to be replaced. All of this is a lot of work for one person, so please get professional help.

Protecting Yourself & Your Home During High Winds

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

High winds may not seem like it, but they can potentially be very dangerous if they get strong and fast enough. If you live in an area where you experience high winds read these tips to keep yourself and your home safe.

1. Beware of surrounding threats
Before the wind storm picks up, check the perimeter of your home to be aware of any potential risks. Whether it's a broken fence, loose branch or crumbling roof shingles, make any necessary renovations or improvements to ensure you keep your family safe.

2. Keep your appliances grounded
Along with making any last minute exterior renovations, make sure any of your outdoor furniture or appliances are tied down and secure—this includes patio furniture, barbeques, sporting equipment, and even your garden shed.

3. Cover your doors and windows
You might also want to consider installing storm shutters if the wind continues to grow stronger. This will protect your windows from shattering in case flying objects hit your glass, or from bursting open if they are hit by strong gusts of wind.

4. Secure your roof
Strong winds can damage your shingles, making homes more vulnerable to rain and leaks, but homes with metal roofing also face the danger of entire panels being torn away. This raises the risk of wind entering your home.

5. Ensure your garage door is in good condition
A home has four weak spots that will be vulnerable to strong weather conditions: the roof, windows, doors, and garage. In order to make sure your garage is in good condition, call a contractor from a garage company to inspect it and make any repairs to ensure it will withstand a wind storm.

Open Air Drying After Water Loss

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

During the summer months, especially in California with the high heat and low humidity, if you experience a water loss and want to kick start the drying process, one of the best things you could do is open up with the windows and doors and place a couple of fans.

Open air drying is where the air outside is hotter and dryer than the air inside the home. This will start to help dry up the materials that have been affected. If available place some fans in the area to get the air circulating so it can pick up that moisture and send it out the open door or window.

It may not completely dry out everything but it will sure be a good start, then call SERVPRO of San Jacinto/ Idyllwild/ Lakeview to come and assist you with the rest.

We are always happy to help no matter how big or small the job could be.
